Smithereens stay on top, draw with Blues, 0-0

Spring League 2008 at the Airport Field.

The Smithereens however, prevail with 12 points on top of the standing followed by Pacific Island Club Paradise in Cleats with 9 points.

The Smithereens and the Blues had many opportunities to score but both teams stood their ground with strong defense.

Midfielder Maryana Gramlich, Madison Smith and Lovelle D’ Lonsod never quit as they controlled the ball many times to their goal and made several attempts to cross over.

Catherine Andersen did an excellent job as the final line of defense clearing the ball away from their goal.

Goal keeper Marian Ornes was always in the right spot just when the Blues come for an attempt to score.

Smithereens won the opening game against Wild Bill’s Wild Fire, 1-0, with Gramlich getting the score.

Captian Nikki Gabaldon scored in their second game 1-0, and pounded Paradise in Cleats 2-0 on Memorial Day.

Wild Fire 0

One goal away to the finals, Paradise In Cleats beat the Wild Fire, 1-0 as team captain Brenda Schultz scored on a penalty kick early in the second half of the game.

Having the advantage of the wind directing to their goal, Wild Fire had a great chance to tie it up as team captain Lindsay Davis served a hard penalty shot.

But PIC goalie Noi Horey’s tremendous save prevented her from scoring. Regarded as heroine of the day, Horey blocked many shots through the game.

Sonya Lizama also carried the game by saving a goal as she cleared a loose ball already a couple of yards to their goal line.

On the other hand, Wild Fire had bee solid in defense as they consistently cleared the ball out of the goal.
