Green flag on Rota
(DEQ) — The Division of Environmental Quality has analyzed samples collected from Rota’s recreational beaches and storm water drainages this week as part of the regularly scheduled sampling.
None of the samples collected contained excessive concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria nor did they exceed the CNMI’s marine water quality standards.
DEQ assigns all of the sampled beach sites a green flag.
Micronesia Challenge internship
application deadline nears
JUNE 6, 2008 is the deadline to apply for the Micronesia Challenge internship.
The internship is open to students between the ages of 17 and 25, enrolled in college/university and who are passionate about protecting the resources of Micronesia.
In order to assist with the implementation of conservation strategies toward achieving the goals set by the MC, internship opportunities were initiated and the CNMI has two vacant MC Champion positions.
The internship is for one year, and may be extended for an additional year.
The MC Champions are expected to spend at least 10 hours a week conducting Micronesia Challenge education and awareness activities for the residents of Saipan, Tinian and Rota.
The Micronesia Challenge, launched in 2006, is a commitment by the chief executives of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Republic of Palau, the U.S. Territory of Guam and the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands to effectively conserve at least 30 percent of the near-shore marine resources and 20 percent of the terrestrial resources across Micronesia by 2020.
Detailed information about the MC Champion duties, entrance requirements and deadlines can be accessed at www.deq.gov.mp.
Interested applicants may also contact Reina Camacho at the Division of Environmental Quality at 664-8500.
Kittens up for adoption
(PAWS) — On Friday, May 30, a Saipan resident found a box taped shut on the side of the road on Navy Hill. The box contained four kittens that are estimated to be around 5-6 weeks old.
“We know people are desperate to find homes for animals, but to go to this extreme is cruel. Call PAWS at 285-PAWS and we will help you find a home for unwanted animals,” said PAWS president Busenkell.
The kittens appear to be healthy and happy at their foster home. If you are interested in fostering and/or adopting one of these playful and loving kittens, please contact Rachell via e-mail at [email protected] or at 322-2104 or 286-7909.
Also available for adoption is a male kitten that is thought to be about 6-8 weeks old.
“He has beautiful markings and would be a perfect cat for a family with no other animals,” said PAWS vice president Melissa Simms who is fostering the animal.
If you are interested in adopting this kitten, please contact Melissa at [email protected], 234-1253 or 285-PAWS.
NMC buildings undergo facelift
(NMC) — As part of its ongoing efforts to improve its facilities and infrastructure to further enhance student learning experiences on campus, Northern Marianas College has announced that three of the four renovation projects on campus have reached completion.
The completion of the projects also place NMC closer to meeting the accreditation mandates set by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges.
The completed projects include the following: Building L, which houses NMC’s procurement and maintenance offices, which were temporarily located at Buildings N and V; Building Q, which houses three classrooms for NMC’s school of education; and Building S, which serves as a resource center for NMC’s school of education students.
“The completion of the renovation projects on campus illustrates NMC’s commitment to accelerating the improvement of campus facilities and infrastructure for the benefit of our students,” said Dr. Carmen Fernandez, NMC president. “The completion of the construction projects will go a long way in helping to ensure that the college receives accreditation reaffirmation in Jan. 2009.”
The renovated facilities are already being used for their intended purpose.
However, Building M, which will house offices and classrooms for the college’s language department, is still awaiting the installation of its air-conditioning unit.
Once this occurs, students will be expected to begin occupying them for instructional purposes by fall 2008.

NMC names Cabrera to dean’s post
(NMC) — Northern Marianas College has announced the appointment of Debra T. Cabrera, Ph.D., as dean of academic programs and services.
Cabrera, who had been carrying out the duties of the dean in an acting capacity for the last five months, was selected among a pool of other highly qualified candidates to permanently fill the position.
Her chief responsibilities include overseeing six academic departments and ensuring that all students’ academic needs are sufficiently met.
“Dr. Cabrera’s appointment is timely and vital as we move forward with NMC’s effort to obtain full accreditation,” said NMC President Dr. Carmen Fernandez. “She brings a wealth of knowledge, talent, and experience to the management team.”
Prior to becoming dean of academic programs and services, Cabrera served in various academic positions at NMC, the University of Kentucky, and Ohio University. Most recently she worked as a social sciences instructor in NMC’s social sciences and fine arts department.
Cabrera is also the accreditation liaison officer for the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges and the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities.
A graduate of Mt. Carmel High School, Cabrera attended college classes at Northern Marianas College, the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and later earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology from Washington State University. She graduated with her master’s degree in sociology from Ohio University in 1994 and later earned a doctorate in sociology from the University of Kentucky in 2001.
“Over the last several months, the college has made significant progress in strengthening our administrative capacity, which has been an issue that the ACCJC have warned us about repeatedly,” Fernandez said. “Having more experienced and highly competent leadership team members like Dr. Cabrera will greatly aid the college’s accreditation efforts.”
Other recent additions to the NMC management team include Wil Castro, director of Institutional Effectiveness, who was hired in February 2008; and Daisy Villagomez-Bier, dean of student services, who re-joined NMC in December 2007.
The other management team members comprise of Tee Abraham, dean of COMPASS; Adrian Atalig, director of information technology; Mark Mendiola, director of institutional advancement; Martin Mendiola, Rota instructional site program coordinator; and Maria Aguon, Tinian instructional site program coordinator.
