Mendiola says three firms offer alternative energy to Tinian

Mendiola, Covenant-Tinian, said the U.S.-based companies will be presenting their proposals  soon.

The companies are proposing a windmill-powered energy, the senator added.

“Windmill is probably feasible here” so long as the typhoon problem is addressed, he said. “The cost [of power rate] will go up a little in terms of kilowatt-hour, but still, at least, we’ll have an alternative energy in place” that does not require expensive fossil fuels.

Mendiola said although Tinian does not have year-round wind currents, the interested power companies have their own back-up generators to run their windmill system.

He believes that alternative energy is the only solution to the CNMI’s power crisis.
