Discovery Camp wraps
up on Tinian
THE first annual summer Discovery Camp for high school students has come to a close on Tinian much to the disappointment of the 15 campers who took part in the action packed week. As things wrapped up on Friday afternoon, camp coordinator Kim Vaillancourt from the Mariana Institute of Marine Science said that everything was a huge success as evidenced by the fact that “none of the kids wanted it to end.”
According to Vaillancourt, the camp was designed to give students a greater appreciation and understanding for local history, culture and environmental issues. “By providing a wide range of hands on activities under the guidance of dedicated community members we’ve been able to instill a sense of pride and excitement about the marine and terrestrial resources available to the students in their own back yard,” she said.

IConnect launches new communications plan
(ICONNECT) — A first for the CNMI, IConnect has announced an all-new 3000 minute cellular calling plan that also includes unlimited push-2-talk radio, 180 SMS messages and a free phone all for $59 per month.
This new plan will be available to customers starting June 17.
“We are very excited to offer this new 3000 minute plan for the CNMI. IConnect gives super value at very modest pricing,” said Hans Mickelson, general manager, IConnect CNMI. “This plan is revolutionary and breaks the standard mold. It’s about people communicating and doing business freely without the fear of getting a big bill at the end of each month.”
The plan was created to fill the growing demand for this type of communications service in the CNMI, and can be compared to similar options offered by Sprint Nextel in the U.S. where Cellular, PTT and SMS messaging is bundled together.
“This is absolutely a great value for $59 per month. Moreover, the plan includes a free i415 handset, our best selling handset. CNMI residents are doing everything they can to stay connected to family and effectively communicate in business, said Matt Giger, IConnect vice president.”
The new IConnect plan delivers customers airtime at 2 cents a cellular minute. IConnect has the largest group of push-2-talk users in the region. With this plan, PTT is unlimited and included at no extra charge.
New customers will get a free i415 handset, 3000 minutes of airtime, unlimited push-2-talk radio and 180 SMS messages for only $59 per month — with a 24-month subscription. Existing customers can upgrade to this plan by simply extending their contracts.

Red flag raised
at 1 site
(DEQ) — The Division of Environmental Quality says water samples collected from Jeffries Beach contained excessive concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria — enterococci — that exceeded the CNMI’s marine water quality standards.
These bacteria can indicate the presence of human and animal waste in the water.
To adequately address public health concerns, DEQ has given this location a red flag and advises the public not to fish or swim within 300 feet of this location for the next 48 hours or until otherwise notified.
