The referendum at the end of April asked voters whether they wished to have a president as head of state.
According to Radio Tuvalu, the results were in favor of the constitutional monarchy, with 1,260 people voting in favor while 679 were against the proposal.
Voter turnout was low — with close to 2,000 voting out of the 9,000 eligible voters on the island.
In other news, Tuvalu has become the 182nd member state of the International Labor Organization.
Tuvalu’s membership became effective on May 27. The country has been a member of the United Nations since Sept. 5, 2000.
