Instructors David Benn and Davic McClenahan are from the Institute of Police Technology and Management of the University of North Florida
‘This is the second class in a series of classes we are teaching here on Saipan, and it’s called the advanced traffic crash investigation training,” Benn said.
The 80-hour course “involves very intense training particularly involving a lot of math and physics,” he said.
After the advanced accident investigation course, there are other more in-depth classes the police officers will have to take to better analyze car crashes, Benn said.
He said the participants must have a broad experience in traffic and accident investigation and have undergone basic classes.
Benn said the previous training held on Saipan was in 2006. It was the Department of Public Safety who requested that they conduct the training for its police officers.
“We teach classes around the world based on the requests made by local police departments or agencies of different areas,” Benn said.
He added that conducting the trainings and classes here is much cheaper than sending the participants to the University of North Florida where they will get the same training, the same books and attend the same classes.
The advanced accident investigation classes will help police officers aid in their investigations, Benn said.
“In crashes, there are a lot of unanswered questions, and the more training the police officers have, the better they will be able to do their job,” he said.
Better crash investigations will also help make the roads safer, which is the main objective of the training, he added.
