NMI Democrats congratulate ‘people of America’ for Biden-Harris win

“What a historic time both locally and nationally where more women across the country are running and getting elected into office and we’ve just elected our first female vice president,” said NMI Democratic Party Chairwoman Nola Hix in a statement on behalf of the party.

Hix also noted the success of five female candidates, all Democrats, in the NMI midterm elections.

They are former Labor Secretary Edith Deleon Guerrero who won a Saipan Senate seat, Celina Babauta, who won one of the House seats in Precinct 1, Rep. Tina Sablan who retained her seat in Precinct 2, educator Denita Yangetmai who won in Precinct 3, Rep. Sheila Babauta who was reelected in Precinct 4 and former school principal Leila Staffler who won one of the two House seats in Precinct 5.

Hix said despite the challenges surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic, millions of people came out and participated in democracy by exercising their right to vote.

“It was quite the race and now that it’s over we must come together as a nation to heal what divides us,” she said.

“Similar to our NMI Democrats – regardless of party lines we are a party of the people,” she added.

The NMI Democrats, Hix said, are confident that Biden’s presidency is for all Americans, “and we look forward to the excellent partnership with our U.S. delegate for the next four years and beyond.”
