Hopwood school enrollment down to 700

In July, the Board of Education approved the rezoning  of school boundaries to reduce the population at HMS.

In an interview on Tuesday, Ada said the rezoning will address the lack of classrooms and reduce the teacher-student ratio at HMS.

Under the rezoning plan middle school students who reside in Puerto Rico, Navy Hill and Chinatown will enroll in Tanapag Middle School instead of Hopwood.

Middle school students who live in the Chalan Kiya-Mobil area, As Terlaje, Kannat Tabla, As Lito, Fina Sisu and Joeten-Dandan area will enroll in Dandan Middle School.

Since the campus in Chalan Piao was severely damaged by Super Typhoon Yutu in Oct. 2018, HMS had been conducting classes in military tents in Koblerville.

In a previous board meeting, Ada reported that HMS repaired 19 classrooms, the hallways and the cafeteria.

He said the Hopwood administrative staff are preparing to move back on campus and were just waiting for internet connection.
