NMI athletes shine in masters throwing events

TEAM NMI continued to gather medals in the 2023 Oceania Masters Championships Saturday at the Oleai Sports Complex Oval track and field.

In the men’s shotput masters event, Kelvin Fitial collected gold by topping the 35-39 age group with a distance of 10.66m. Micronesia’s Joseph Dabana received the silver with 9.63m while the NMI’s Orrin Pharmin took home the bronze with 7.69m.

The NMI’s Anthony Borja earned his gold medal in the 40-44 age group with a distance of 11.15m. Australia’s Craig Halbmaier took the silver with 10.15m while the NMI’s Nick Gross bagged the bronze with 9.34m.

In the 45-49 age group, the NMI’s Daniel Joab and Greg Borja claimed gold and silver with distances of 10.61m and 6.58m, respectively.

Australia’s Shakti Rathore topped the 30-34 age group with a distance of 8.18m while the NMI’s Angel San Nicolas received the silver with the same distance of 8.18m.

In the women’s shotput event,  the NMI’s Maria Ornes bagged the gold medal in the 55-59 age group by throwing a distance of 6.40m while Australia’s Helen Roberts claimed silver with 6.04m and her compatriot Alison Fairweather settled for the bronze with 5.26m.

More gold medals

On Sunday, the NMI won more gold medals.

In the javelin event, Gross threw a distance of 38.85m to bring home the gold in the 40-44 age group; Daniel Joab threw 33.80m for the gold in the 45-49 age group while Leo Wania earned silver with 23.99m.

Also winning the gold were the NMI’s Eptes Epity with 29.41m in the 50-54 age group; and Tony Ichiuo with 40.67m in the 55-59 age group.

The NMI’s Rhonda Gross, for her part, settled for the silver medal in the 40-44 age group with a distance of 11.18m.
