The opening statements from the prosecutor and the defense counsel are expected to be made today, Friday, when the trial resumes at 8:15 am.
The defendant is Xinzhou Ren, a Chinese national, who was granted CNMI-only conditional parole by CBP until May 15, 2018 and had overstayed that authorized date.
On Thursday, he appeared in federal court with his defense attorneys Robert T. Torres and Vince Seman. Mike Yang was also present and served as Ren’s interpreter.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Garth Backe and Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent Nicole Sively appeared for the U.S. government.
