Former Saipan resident Jerome Diyco poses in the Classic Physique Category of the Guam National Bodybuilding Competition on July 22, 2022.
“ATHLETES, coaches, mentors, and fitness enthusiast all seek good results,” said National Academy of Sports Medicine personal trainer Jerry Diaz.
However, he added, to achieve desired results one must adapt to new environments and learn what makes others successful in reaching their goals.
“When competing against other Micronesian teams, for example, NMI athletes are exposed to a standard of performance that they must emulate to be successful,” Diaz said.
“We must step outside of our comfort zone and, if needed, try a new training regimen,” he added.
This, in turn, may require the help of coaches and other certified professionals to avoid “yo-yo” results and achieve year-round success, Diaz said.
A coach or a trainer can help us learn from our mistakes and teach us how to overcome challenges, he said.
“However, it still comes down to the individual’s determination and consistency when following specific and rigorous guidance to meet the person’s fitness goals,” Diaz said.
He said it is also important for an individual to seek the support of his family and friends.
According to Diaz, many local athletes who have moved off-island, or have changed teams or coaches are seeking new and tougher challenges.
He said they are eager to adapt to their new environment and learn new skills.
“As they say, iron sharpens iron,” Diaz added.
