Palau president requests lawmakers to OK $250K for Guam

KOROR (Island Times/Pacnews) — Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr. has asked the Olbiil Era Kelulau or the Palau National Congress to appropriate $250,000 for Guam’s recovery efforts from the devastation of Typhoon Mawar.

“It is imperative to recognize the significant impacts Typhoon Mawar has caused to our neighboring friends in Guam,” Whipps stated in his request to lawmakers.

He said because Guam is home to Palauans, it would be “compassionate “to support Guam during a difficult time.”

According to the American Red Cross, a month since Typhoon Mawar devastated Guam, some areas are still without power and water.

“Many of those taking refuge in shelters are unable to return home because of the damage from the storm,” the president’s statement said.

The storm, which hit Guam in May, was the strongest to impact the island in years.
