THE Kagman Agricultural Farms and Producers Association or KAFPA and the Department of Corrections won the 77th Liberation Day Parade float competition in their respective divisions, the Liberation Day Committee announced Tuesday night.

KAFPA was the winner of the nonprofit organization division, while Corrections took home the top prize in the citizenship division. Each won $4,000.

Brad Ruszala, the master of ceremonies, said there were no entries for the business division

The other participating organizations included the House of Representatives, the Office of the Governor, the Office on Aging, the CNMI Childcare Providers Association, The Talaabwogh Star Association, Women of Destiny, and the Palauan Community Association.

KAFPA took home the top spot by presenting two floats designed to look like native huts. The floats were filled with locally grown fruits and vegetables and one was pulled by a tractor. The other float had a pig roasting on a spit.

For its part, the Department of Corrections float was decorated with palm leaves, bamboo and other native plants.

The float leaned into the 77th Liberation Day theme, “Resiliency Rising,” and displayed the following inspirational message: “You are your Choices, Challenges, Changes.” Atop the float was an art installation showing the stages an inmate can take to “rise” after leaving incarceration.

Variety files state that there were over 40 entities that had registered for the parade.

This year’s event started at 10 a.m. with the line of floats and marchers extending from National Office Supply to Joeten Motors.

The parade grandstand was at the Garapan Fishing Base.

Thousands of residents and visitors witnessed the parade, and enjoyed the food, bingo, other games of chance as well as live entertainment at the carnival grounds.
