ALL government employees on Rota are removing typhoon debris from roads, parks and other public areas.

“Our recovery efforts are moving along as best we can,” Rota Mayor Aubry Hocog told Variety in an online interview. “We have so many things going on at once so we are trying to be organized. We have created a cleanup plan in terms of clearing all debris at all public facilities, main highways, and inner villages,” she added.

On Wednesday, May 31, the Office of the Mayor’s Hospitality Division and the 19th Rota Municipal Council assisted students and other community members in cleaning the Rota Roundhouse in preparation for the Class of 2023 graduation on Friday, June 2, 2023.

For their part, the resident employees of  the Department of Finance and the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs cleared Guata Beach of green waste and debris.

The Rota Mayor’s Office at the same time informed the general public that public facilities around the island will be temporarily closed until further notice for  debris removal and structural repairs.

The areas that will be closed are Small Island, East Harbor, Chamorro Village, Teteto Beach, Guata Beach, Bird Sanctuary, Swimming Hole and Alaguan Bay.

“We’re just trying to balance the manpower while assisting the schools with their end-of-the-school-year programs,” the mayor said. “There’s also the loading/off loading of  goods and supplies from FEMA, CNMI Homeland Security, the governor’s office, other CNMI leaders and the business community,” Hocog added.

“Everyone in the community wants to move things along as quickly as they can,” she said. “This is a team effort. It is a beautiful thing to hear when students and other members of the community want to help out as well.”
