Public radio station eyes production studio on Saipan

MARIANAS Educational Media Services Inc. or MEMSI may open a production studio on Saipan.

MEMSI owns KRNM, a non-commercial radio station broadcasting a public radio program at 88.1 MHz; and KMOP, a non-commercial radio station that broadcasts a religious program at 91.5 MHz.

In an interview last week, MEMSI President and Operating Director Darryl A. Borja Taggerty said he is exploring the possibility of setting up a production studio on Saipan where local shows can be pre-recorded and broadcast live to the community.

However, he added, “we’re not trying to compete with other stations. I am not trying to replicate any other programs.”

Because of its public radio format, Taggerty said, their station can broadcast public discussions or even local news articles in Chinese.

“I’ve already talked to one person, and he’s already doing it using social media. But he could do it on a radio station, if I have a studio here,” he added.

Taggerty said he has also met with  Humanities Council officials and an individual who conducts on-the-job training for young people in audio production.

He said they are also looking for someone to perform engineering work and maintenance of equipment.
