HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — Workshops on gardening presented by Guam Sustainable Culture and starting in November are now open for registration, encouraging residents of the island to grow and preserve their own produce.
The Healthy Futures Challenge 2023 plans to hold gardening and food preparation workshops from Nov. 4, 2023, until Jan. 27, 2024, where attendees will be guided by the workshop team through the growing process – sowing and saving seeds; applying fertilizers and natural pesticides; harvesting; composting; and maintenance. Workshops include:
- Intro to Gardening and Local Food Nutrition: 8:30-11 a.m. Nov. 4 at the Guam Green Growth Hagåtña Garden.
- Seedling Care, Container Gardening, and Transplanting: 3:30-5:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at the GSC Classroom at Chamorro Village.
- Composting, Soil Health, and Sheet Mulching: 3:30-5:30 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Guam Green Growth Hagåtña Garden.
- Pest Management and Plant Diseases: 3:30-5:30 p.m. Jan. 9, 2024, at the GSC Classroom at Chamorro Village.
- Harvesting and Food Preservation: 8:30-11 a.m. Jan. 27, 2024, at the Guam Green Growth Hagåtña Garden.
GSC said it believed “if island residents are equipped with the materials and knowledge for growing nutritious foods, then we may see decreased rates of malnutrition in children and adults.” Studies from the University of Guam revealed issues of poor nutrition that lead to childhood obesity and other health conditions on the island.
The Guam Green Growth People’s Garden is seen June 5, 2023, in Hagåtña.
