Swanson names new deputies

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — There’s new leadership at the helm of the Guam Department of Education, as the superintendent has solidified his team of deputies.

The selection of the new deputy superintendents has concluded, and the individuals vetted have begun work, according to GDOE Superintendent Kenneth Erik Swanson.

Joseph Sanchez will remain in charge of curriculum and instruction.

Kenneth Perez takes on the role of deputy superintendent of education support and community learning, taking over the role from Erika Cruz.

Joann Camacho, former first lady and businesswoman, assumed the responsibilities of deputy superintendent of finance and administrative services.

With Camacho named deputy superintendent of finance, Frank Cooper-Nurse, who served as acting deputy superintendent of finance, has returned to his position as chief auditor of the GDOE internal audit office.

“These changes brings a sense of continuity in (the) instructional program, while we are further empowered to modernize business practices and bring private sector business skills into the system. Emphasis on effective leadership and clearer, transparent business practices in support of our strategic plan are among the intended outcomes,” Swanson said.

The appointments are at will, Swanson said. They “may be adjusted as the realignment of the department and right-sizing of the system are realized in the coming months and years.”

Currently, the deputy superintendent for accountability and assessment position is being reviewed for selection and implementation in the near future, he said.
