Community members warned about possible scam

LOCALLY generated text messages regarding undeliverable packages have been circulating in the community, Variety learned.

Vice Speaker Joel Camacho said he and other lawmakers received the messages on Thursday. “Potential scam,” he added.

A retail business operator, Lilia King, said she also received a text message regarding packages, but she ignored them. “I’m not expecting anything so why should I get one?” she asked.

The text messages are not associated with the Saipan Post Office, an employee who requested anonymity said.

Other community members have also received similar text messages.

“Hello, your package is pending, please confirm the address and pay the 2.99 shipping fee at [a website address].”

Another message stated: “The USPS package has arrived at the warehouse and cannot be delivered due to incomplete address information….”

The Department of Public Safety told Variety that it’s a USPS and Customs issue.

Postmaster Harry Wilcox III declined to issue a statement, saying he does not have enough information regarding the issue.
