KOSUKE Sato and Rosemarie Chisato blew past the competition to top their respective divisions in Run Saipan’s 3rd Annual July 4th Independence Day 2-Mile Race Tuesday morning at the Garapan Fishing Base.
For the past two years, the course always ended with a U-turn. This year, Run Saipan President Edward Dela Cruz Jr. decided to utilize a straight race course which gave runners the opportunity to sprint their way to the finish line.
Sato finished the two-mile distance with a time of 00:12:26. After crossing the finish line, he looked at his watch and casually said, “Not bad.” The other runners struggled to finish under 14 minutes.
“I just came out to run before I watch the [Liberation Day] parade,” said Sato whose wife marched with the Japanese Society of the Northern Marianas.
In second place in the men’s division was Theo Rodgers who clocked 00:13:13 while Aaron Pamintuan finished at 00:14:49.
In the women’s division, Rosemarie Chisato came out on top with a time of 00:15:57 followed by Jessica Ortizo at 00:16:49 and Marilou Carlos at 00:18:10.
Latte Built owner Derek Cutting, who has sponsored the annual run since its inception, said the two-mile distance was chosen to mirror the Army Combat Fitness Test.
