PUERTO Rico Bento and the Martech Ol’Aces solidified their standings in the Saipan Centennial Lions Club Invitational Basketball League after defeating their respective foes Tuesday at the Civic Center basketball court.
Puerto Rico locked in the #3 seed as they powered past the K2 Ballerz, 82-67.
In the opening quarter, the K2 Ballerz constantly attacked the rim led by Jay Palmes with six straight points with his team mates chipping in their contributions.
For their part, Puerto Rico’s Jaime Antonio and Daryl Foronda scored all of their team’s 18 points to grasp the lead, 18-14.
In the second quarter, Puerto Rico started to gain distance as Mac Mintac took over the spotlight. His elusive sidestep worked wonders as he drew a handful of fouls. He carried his team with 10 points to push a nine-point advantage.
The K2 Ballerz fought back with Tom Santos, Kaipo Dikito and Palmes at the frontline, but they were unable to stop Mintac’s onslaught.
Mintac continued his dominance in the final quarter with nine points. He even attempted a dunk, but was short. Puerto Rico Bento won anyway, 82-67.
Ol’Aces vs Socho
The Martech Ol’Aces remain at the top of the food chain after powering past Socho Team, 84-63.
Both teams fought for control in the first half. Socho’s Doming Faisao and John Nekaifes led the first quarter with four points apiece while Quirin Faisao picked up his rhythm in the second canto to keep his team in the game.
The Ol’Aces managed to stay ahead, thanks to Douglas Schmidt’s speed and ability to finish at the rim, leading his team with 16 points while Preston Basa and Brandy Onopwy provided support with a mix of long range and perimeter shots for a 44-39 lead by halftime.
In the third quarter, the Ol’Aces stared to pick Socho apart as Schmidt and Basa unleashed a barrage of three-pointers while Socho stuck to the inside game.
The Ol’Aces pushed a double-digit spread and eventually put the game out of reach in the final quarter to secure the win, 84-63.
