I AM writing to address the pressing need for alternative economic solutions in our islands, particularly focusing on initiatives that harness the bountiful resources of our land and sea. Given the current challenges facing our primary tourism industry, it is imperative to explore and invest in alternative avenues that can bolster our economy sustainably.
As we navigate through the aftermath of the global pandemic, it’s becoming evident that the rebound of our tourism sector might take an additional two years. Additionally, the reliance on casino tourism has proven unsustainable and unreliable in recent times, prompting a shift towards more robust and locally driven economic strategies.
In this light, I strongly advocate for the promotion and development of agritourism as a viable option for economic revitalization. Our islands possess an incredible wealth of natural resources that can be harnessed through agricultural and aquacultural practices. Encouraging local farmers and fishermen to engage in agritourism initiatives can not only diversify our economy but also bolster our food security and resilience against external market fluctuations.
To facilitate the growth of agritourism, I propose the implementation of incentives for farmers as follows:
1) A nominal fee of $1 per acre per year for land use could encourage greater participation.
2) Stipulating adherence to sustainable practices such as crop rotation ensures the long-term viability of our agricultural endeavors.
3) Farmers shall provide their products to the Public Farmers Market. This can serve as a central hub for local produce, creating a direct avenue for farmers to showcase their products. This not only promotes economic activity but also fosters a sense of community engagement and supports local entrepreneurship.
4) Allocated public lands granted to farmers should not be subleased at any time — this will safeguard the integrity of these initiatives.
The rising costs of food have significantly burdened our community, making access to affordable, locally sourced produce a pressing need. By nurturing agritourism and incentivizing our farmers to engage in sustainable practices, we can mitigate these challenges and create self-sustaining local food system.
I humbly request your support in championing these initiatives. Your advocacy and leadership in promoting agritourism will not only foster economic growth but also ensure food security and affordability for our community.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I am hopeful that together, we can forge a path towards a more prosperous and sustainable future for our people. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office at (670) 234-6208. Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.
