At least once or twice a week, Jerry Diaz gets into a bathtub after strength and conditioning training.
WE work out and follow a nutrition plan, but sometimes we don’t get the results we’re aiming for and end up gaining weight. Why?
Jerry Diaz, a National Academy of Sports Medicine certified personal trainer, said the possible reasons for weight gain include:
• Yo-Yo dieting. One must stick to a sustainable daily lifestyle approach that includes a nutritional plan and exercises, Diaz said. Otherwise, we may end up returning to our previous habits, which can result in weight gain, he added.
• Eating unhealthy food. These include highly processed foods, sugary snacks, fast food, and microwaveable dinners. One must avoid increased calorie intake. It is also important to increase awareness of our meal portions, Diaz said.
• Decreased movement coupled with increased food intake will lead to weight gain.
• Undiagnosed medical issue. There are many lifestyle factors that are related to unintentional weight gain, including medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, depression, and binge eating disorder.
Diaz said it is important to speak to a health professional who can assist in determining if one has an undiagnosed medical issue.
• Lack of sleep or rest can contribute to weight gain. The body’s respiratory and circulatory systems will also be affected, which contributes to increased mood swings and unnecessary stress.
• High levels of stress can lead to an increase in cortisol levels, which in turn may result in heightened hunger and overeating.
