Bench trial of lawmaker accused of assault to begin on July 19

SUPERIOR Court Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo has scheduled the bench trial of Rep. Vicente C. Camacho for July 19 at 9 a.m. relating to his involvement in a domestic violence incident on Oct. 29, 2021, on Freedom Drive, Chinatown.

Camacho, 61, and co-defendant Teipo Nikiti, 21, are accused of assaulting Steven Koch.

The defendants were charged with assault and battery, and disturbing the peace charges that were considered as misdemeanors.

Camacho is represented by attorney Michael A. White while Nikiti is represented by the Public Defender’s Office.

The other individual who was also accused of assaulting Koch was a then-14-year-old juvenile; as such, no information about this person is available to the public.

Camacho was arrested by the Department of Public Safety on the evening of Nov. 2, 2021, but he immediately posted a $1,250 cash bail and remains out of custody. He was re-elected in the 2022 general election.

Koch suffered abrasions, bruising, and pain on his head and body from the blows and was taken to the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. for examination.

Koch, his wife and daughter on Nov. 1, 2021, petitioned the Superior Court and sought a temporary restraining order to prevent Camacho and three other individuals “from engaging in any further physical harm, disturbance, harassment, blocking, threats and verbal abuse.”

On Nov. 12, 2021, Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho found cause for domestic violence and granted a temporary restraining order and one-year protective order against Rep. Vicente C. Camacho, Ignacio “Ike” S. Concepcion, Fiel Reynaldo Ortiz, and Tiepo A. Nikiti.

The TRO expired on Nov. 8, 2022.

The incident stemmed from a long-standing animosity between Koch and his brother-in-law, Concepcion, and it took place near the homes of Koch and Concepcion on Freedom Drive, Chinatown around 11 p.m. on Oct. 29, 2021.
