GPA: $100 credit ends this month, speaker introduced extension bill

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — The $500 Prugråman Ayuda Para I Taotao-ta Energy Credit program, which credited Guam Power Authority customers $100 toward their active power bills since May of this year, is scheduled to end this month. The extension of the credit was made possible by Public Law 37-16, which was signed into law on May 22. It helped customers from May through September, according to a news release from GPA.

Bill 173-37 was introduced by Speaker Therese Terlaje on Sept. 22. Bill 173 proposes extending the energy credits for an additional three months, from October to December.

GPA stated in its news release that the outcome of Bill 173 has yet to be determined. If no action is taken by the Guam Legislature, and if the bill is not signed into law by the governor by October, customers may no longer receive the monthly $100 credit on their power bills starting in October, the release stated.

According to the utility, GPA is offering customers suggestions on how to reduce their power bills.

“You can find ongoing energy-saving tips on GPA’s customer service website (guampowerauthority.com) and social media pages (@guampowerauthority on Facebook and Instagram),” GPA stated in its release.

John Benavente, GPA general manager, said, “The last four months of the year, from September through December, are typically high-demand periods for power on Guam due to schools reopening and the start of the holidays. Customers can start planning their conservation efforts now to save during the holiday months.”
