HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — Sen. Dwayne San Nicolas has introduced a bill which, if passed, will ensure a memorial is built to honor Guam veterans who served in Vietnam.
Bill 170-37 was introduced by San Nicolas with the intent to grant the Independent Vietnam Veterans Association of Guam with the authority to build a memorial within Skinner Plaza to honor “the 77 sons of Guam who made the ultimate sacrifice and all of Vietnam Veterans in service of our island.”
“Vietnam Veterans served during a long, dark war for all the freedom we have today,” San Nicolas stated in a press release issued Tuesday.
“It’s our time to honor and remember the sacrifices made by many Americans, including our people of Guam, through this memorial monument,” he added.
Considering that Skinner Plaza is home to several other monuments, Bill 170 details the memorial would be no more than 20 feet in width and height and take up two lots of land, specifically lots 5 and 6 in Skinner Plaza. Furthermore, the plan and design of the monument will be approved by senators and “does not hold the Government of Guam liable for any expenses related to the construction of the monument.”
Additionally, if Bill 170 is passed, the law to build the memorial will be effective immediately.
Bill 170 is co-sponsored by Vice Speaker Tina Muña Barnes and Sens. Joe San Agustin, Amanda Shelton, William Parkinson and Roy Quinata.
