The then-officials and board of CPA approved the procurement of a third backup generator but this has not been completed.
The governor took over CPA in May.
CPA’s functioning generator is not enough to sustain the power needs at the airport terminal where an automated checking system is in place.
Due to frequent power outages and the lack of generators at the airport, a number of flights have been delayed, Variety learned.
In September last year, 298 tourists from Japan were stranded at the airport for over three hours due to a power outage.
Some airlines have already expressed their concerns about the airport’s current condition and they fear that it may affect the islands’ tourist arrivals.
Yesterday, the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. issued a change in its loading schedule “due to a failure of CPA’s backup generators.”
Persons in charge of the operations at the airport declined to comment.
