Hocog, the Rota legislative delegation chairman, said they are now revisiting the master plan which aims to boost the economic activities and development projects on their island.
However, Hocog said while they are strongly pushing the implementation of the master plan but they also need to “solicit opinions and suggestions” from Rota’s leadership.
He said they want to know what proposals in the master plan can be implemented on Rota.
For his part, Senate Vice President Felix T. Mendiola, Covenant-Rota, said the inclusion of the free trade zone in the master plan should be seriously considered.
The proposed 30-hectare free trade zone, however, is yet to be identified.
Rota Municipal Council Secretary Vicente M. Calvo, in a separate interview, said the Rota development master plan must be upgraded in anticipation of the casino industry.
Calvo said he supports the inclusion of the free trade zone in the plan.
He said the leadership meeting with Mayor Joseph S. Inos, the municipal council and the legislative delegation is important because “this is the only way we can focus on addressing the pressing needs of the island.”
“We need a cohesive approach in order to address the concern in Rota,” Calvo said.
In their trade mission to Guam last month, the Rota legislative delegation also reconsidered the $400,000 development master plan prepared by Tenorio & Associate Inc.
Mendiola said the trade mission was “very positive” and they established initial arrangement for a possible Guam-Rota-Tinian ferry route.
The senator said they negotiated with the buyer of the Rota Resort & Country Club, Hee K. Cho of Guam, regarding the ferry route.
