According to Daewoo officials, the donation comes in the form of repair work done to a section of the Compact Road that was damaged as a result of an accident last year.Daewoo was the contractor for the 53-mile, $149 million road project. The section of the road in Ngaraard was charred on Nov. 14, 2007 when a Nissan Terrano driven by Dr. Irene Naito caught on fire. The doctor escaped unharmed but most of the Terrano disintegrated in the fire. The extreme heat of the burning vehicle melted the asphalt. The damaged road had not been repaired properly until more than a week ago.According to Daewoo officials, most of the materials needed for the repair were bought from Surangel & Sons Co.“The cost of the repair — materials and labor — is in the range of $15,000,” Daewoo said. “The repair work done on the damaged road is Daewoo’s contribution to Palau — a gift.”Daewoo at the same time commended Surangel & Sons for its support in the repair work of the Compact Road.“We’d like to acknowledge Surangel & Sons Co. for its generous discount on the materials needed for the repair work,” Daewoo said. “The company’s effort into ensuring that the repair work is completed adds more meaning to Daewoo’s donation, and we thank Surangel and Sons Co. for its support.”The public is asked to drive safely and to be cautious of all ongoing maintenance and repair work on the Compact Road.
