Another forum for guest workers on Saturday

Irene Tantiado, the coalition president, said Rep. Tina Sablan, Ind.-Saipan, and Federal Labor Ombudsman Jim Benedetto are expected to update the guest workers about the federalization law during the forum on Saturday at the Kilili Beach in Susupe.

Guest workers will be informed about the discussions between CNMI and federal officials, Tantiado said.

Rabby Syed of the CNMI Bangladeshi Community said their group, together with the Nepalese, Sri Lankan and Indian guest workers, will ask Benedetto to address the plight of the long-term guest workers.

“We would like to know if we can still work and stay here,” Syed told Variety.

He said guest workers have contributed to the progress and development of the community and “granting us improved immigration status is fair enough.”

On June 28, the coalition conducted a forum for Filipino guest workers at the Saipan Community Church.

Syed said they are expecting more than 500 guest workers to attend the forum on Saturday.

The Bangladeshi community, he added, will serve lunch after the forum to show their gratitude  to Sablan and Benedetto.
