US military urged to provide NMI with power barge

Reps. David M. Apatang, R-Saipan, and Justo S. Qutugua, D-Saipan, said part of the U.S. Navy Regional Marianas Center’s vision is to enhance the quality of life for the people of the commonwealth.

The two  sponsored House Joint Resolution 16-10 which the House adopted on Friday.

“With the [help] of the commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, the CNMI may be able to identify and acquire any surplus supply of affordable and reliable power generators or alternative sources of energy from the U.S. Department of Defense,” the resolution stated.

Lawmakers said the power crisis in Saipan has gone from bad to worse.

Rotating blackouts every two hours on Saipan remain in effect as the government-owned power plants cannot provide enough electricity for the island.

The U.S. military buildup on Guam  will cover the Northern Marianas, which the American armed forces used as a staging ground for the atomic bombs it dropped on the Japanese cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima during World War II.

The military has leased about two-thirds of public lands on Tinian until 2028.
