Ex-education chief hired as classroom teacher

His wife, Marianas High School principal Karen Borja approved his application, saying that the former education chief will teach Algebra 1 for ninth and 10th graders beginning on Sept. 8.

It was in 1994, when the couple started teaching at MHS.

Mr. Borja transferred to Hopwood Junior High School in the following year and later served as its principal until 1999.

“It was in that same year when he went back here at MHS to teach our students,” Mrs. Borja said.

In 2000, Mr. Borja was named associate education commissioner for administrative services.

Six years later, the Board of Education voted 3 to 2 to name him commissioner of education.

The other applicant was Rita A. Sablan, who was recently selected by BOE as Mr. Borja’s successor.

The board fired him in June after the members expressed their dissatisfaction with his performance as education commissioner.
