Over $10K up for grabs in Saipan Annual International Fishing Tournament

Spearheaded by the Saipan Fishermen’s Association, the tournament that will be held on Aug. 9 and 10 will run in five categories plus the competition for the heaviest total weight.

The categories are heaviest catch of Bill Fish, Yellow Fin, Wahoo, Mahi-mahi and Skipjack Tuna. Three winners—first to third—will be selected from these categories.

The Saipan Fishermen’s Association will award the $10,000 to the first participant to land a marlin weighing over 624.34 pounds.

The launching points of the tournament will be at Sugar Dock in Chalan Kanoa, Fishing Base and Smiling Cove Marina in Garapan. Launching time will be at 6 a.m., to 8 a.m. Those who will come after 8 a.m,, the launching point will at Smiling Cove Marina only.

The fishing method in the tournament will be trolling which is primarily used in the pelagic fishery.

And as a requirement, the Department of Public Safety’s Boating Safety Unit will conduct boat safety inspections a week prior to the event. So individuals wanting to have their boat inspected during the week should contact Boating Safety at (670) 322-9182 for appointment.

The boats that fail to undergo prior inspection will have to go through full inspection before launching in the first day of the event.

The entrance fee will be $150 per boat for captain and one crew and $25 for each additional angler.

The pre-registration will be held on Friday, Aug. 8 from 5 p.m., to 6:30 p.m., at the Smiling Cove Marina where officials of Saipan Fishermen’s Association will briefly go over rules and regulation of the tournament, and lead blessing of the boats.
