Sendai University starts this year exercise program

This year’s week-long program started at the Age old Center in Koror where 41 senior citizens participated.The program will continue on in Ngaraard and Ngaremenlegui today and Airai and Melekeok on Wednesday.Hiroshi Sato, Vice President of Sendai University said that in Palau obesity has advanced and approximately 70 percent of those aged above 50 are diagnosed with diabetes.The program of the university which started three years ago is aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle among the people of Palau.Sato said the program will continue on until 2009.The Sendai University said that as we get old we will notice physical changes in our bodies like in our appearance, muscles, body fat and bones.The University said that exercise for the elderly is very important to prevent obesity.Sendai delegates have designed program for the senior citizens that can be easily followed.Sato said there are at least 25 volunteers from the learning institution.Vice President Elias Camsek Chin said thanked Sato and the rest of the team for the program and that several senior citizens are benefiting from it.He said that the university is considering a conduct of training for the kids in Palau to equip them the skills to take care of the elderly.Today the program is set in Ngaraard at 9:30 a.m. located in Ulimang, in Ngaremlnegui it will be held at the Old Age Center at 2 p.m.For the Wednesday Program in Airai, the schedule is at 9:30 a.m. at Ked Center while in Melekeok its at 2 p.m.Senior citizens at the neighboring states are likewise invited to participate in the program.
