Ramon A. Bermudez appeared in court with his counsel from the Public Defender’s Office before Presiding Judge Robert C. Naraja.

Bermudez waived the reading of the information and his constitutional rights.

Naraja set the next hearing date for Oct. 6 at 1:30 p.m.

The defendant was earlier ordered to post 10 percent of the $1,500 cash bail required. He was released to a third party custodian subject to several conditions set by the court.

These include returning to the court for scheduled hearings and when required to do so, obeying all commonwealth laws and not leaving Saipan without the court’s permission.

He was also ordered to have no direct contact with the victims in the case, and refrain from taking any alcoholic beverages.

Bermudes was charged with one count of assault and battery, and one count of criminal mischief.

Detective Andrea C. Ozawa of the Criminal Investigation Division stated in an affidavit filed in court that they received a call for assistance at around 11 p.m. on Aug. 9  regarding a domestic violence in Chalan Kanoa.

Police officers who responded to the scene saw a female holding her swollen forehead which she said was punched by the defendant.

It was also learned that the defendant attacked the victim’s husband and threw rocks at the victim’s pick-up.

Investigation showed that the defendant’s wife,  who is also the sister of the victim, came home from a party at 10:40 p.m on that night.

The defendant’s wife drove the car. As she was parking the vehicle, the defendant started cussing at them

The complaint stated that the defendant then punched the victim’s husband who was still in the truck, and when the victim tried to pacify the defendant, he punched her on the forehead.

The defendant turned himself in to the Department of Public Safety on Aug. 11. He was arrested and turned over to the Department of Corrections where he was booked and detained.
