Skate park grand opening in October

I-SK8 society secretary Deirdre Mclarin told yesterday’s Rotary Club meeting at the Hyatt Regency Saipan that the project will be completed by Sept. 26.

“We started to rally for a skate park project on Saipan back in 2006, and we are finally nearing our goal,” Mclarin said.

She said the project came as a result of endless meetings and planning on their part but it was not hard to persuade the youth, students and skate enthusiasts to join the club.

The skate park project coordinators earlier hired skate park specialist John Glaze from Indonesia to oversee the construction of the project until its completion, Mclarin said.

“We would like to extend our thanks to the Rotary Club of Saipan for helping make our dreams come true. Without you, the skate park wouldn’t have been there,” Mclarin said.

Glaze arrived on Saipan last month and had been at the jobsite everyday to be sure that the construction of the skate park was going smoothly and designed safely for the skaters.

The skate park, located in Garapan has a smaller area compared to skating parks in other places but the design was done by the skaters themselves and approved by the club.

Glaze earlier told the Variety that the skate park has a unique design resembling a three-quarter bowl where one side tapers down to a defining ledge.

The Saipan Rotary Club started raising funds for the skate park project some years ago after seeing that children were facing risks when skating at the park and on roadways.
