Rabby Syed, Saipan Taxi Association president, said yesterday they are paying an $800 third party liability insurance policy every year.
“It is hard for us to pay at one time because everything is going up. We hope the government will consider our request to allow us to pay our insurance on an installment basis,” he said.
Syed said they will ask the Department of Commerce to consider their request because “we are hit hard by the economic crisis.”
Their business, he said, is also affected by the tour packages of some tour operators who use buses to transport tourists.
Syed said he is appealing to tour operators to allow legitimate taxi drivers to serve tourists.
Due to the increase in the registration and driver’s license fees, he said taxi drivers are having hard time in sustaining the maintenance of their taxis.
Syed is calling all taxi drivers to attend a meeting on Sunday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at American Memorial Park.
