Sports & Recs reminds leagues of unpaid utility fees

In the past, sport event organizers enjoyed free utility when using the facilities at the Oleai Sports Complex.

But in 2006, according to Sports and Recreation Division Director Joe Lizama they have to collect fees from those using the gymnasium, the baseball and softball fields for utility.

Lizama called for a meeting with all league organizers on Thursday last week to remind them that the utility fees have to be paid on monthly basis and not until the league is over as what many of them might have thought.

Unfortunately, nobody showed leaving the Sports and Rec groping for means to reiterate the regulations on fees.

Amidst continuous power outages that delay sports activities at the Gilbert C. Ada Gym and surrounding ballfields, the Sports and Recs that manages the facilities is also facing difficulty of collecting utility fees.

Lizama said there are some league organizers who haven’t paid their usage and utility fees.

Every month, the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation provides the Sports and Recreation with rate for the spotlights and lamps that operate during games.

The cost per hour for the spotlights is the number of operational units multiplied by the monthly rate which is equal the rate per hour for its usage.

For instance, the softball field as 20 operational spotlights and the rate for month of March for example, is 0.376 per kilowatt hour, the computation to arrive at the hourly rate is 20 x $0.376 = $7.52 per hour.

Track and field which has 24 operational spotlights since the rate for the month of June is $0.387, per kwh, that would be $9.288 per hour.

The Ada Gym has 35 lamps at 400 watts each. In computing for hourly rate, take the number of operational lamps and multiply by government’s hourly rate.

The problems arise when the sports league that run two months or more do not pay until the end of the league.

The Sports and Recs, Lizama said wants to inform league organizers and the public once again that the utility fees of sports events running more than one month are due by the end of the month and not after the entire league.
