Oceania athletes chosen June’s best

In a meeting at the Gilbert C. Ada Gym conference room last night, the Northern Marianas Amateur Sports Association agreed that the Oceania Championship athletes who were nominated by the Northern Marianas Athletics be considered athletes of the month for June.

Jacque Wonenberg, who won NMI’s first gold medal in the Oceania tournament was voted female student athlete of the month.

The 16-year-old Marianas High School student edged out a competitor from Tonga, scoring 3,455 points in Pentathlon. She also won second place in the 4×100 relay, placed third in long jump; third in triple jump and fourth place in javelin throw.

Trevor Ogumoro of Kagman High School was chosen male student athlete. He won silver medal in octathlon surpassing Guam’s athlete. He also won bronze medal in high jump as he leaped 1.60 meters far.

Yvonne Bennett whom the NMA considered to be the most dominant female sprinter in Micronesia was chosen June female athlete of the month.

She set a new NMI record of 12.99 seconds in 100-meter run in the Oceania Championship and was the first NMI woman to make it to the finals in the 100, 200, and 400 meters smashing all the three records in the process.

Ketson “Jack” Kebiriel is voted June Male Athlete of the Month. He won NMI’s fourth silver medal in the 3,000 meter steeple chase. He competed in 13 Oceania Championship events.
