Koblerville school to have fewer students

Koblerville will have 430 students in September compared to 442 kindergarten to 6th grade students last school year.

The reduction was due to the relocation of some families to Guam where residents are finding “more suitable employment opportunities,” school authorities told the Variety.

As of yesterday, the school only had 28 kindergarten students — or 12 short of the target 40 students for the morning and afternoon sessions.

Last school year, Koblerville had “oversized” classes majority of which were for 4th graders.

For its 1st grade last year, there were three classes, one of which had 25 students.

This September, two of the three 1st grade classes will have 15 students each, while the third will have 18.

For the 2nd grade, the two classes will have 19 and 20 students compared to 58 students last year.

The three 3rd grade classes this year will have 16, 17 and 23 students.

Last school year, each of these three classes had 23 students.

The 4th grade classes were overcrowded last year with 26 students per teacher, but in September the two classes will have only 19 and 18 students.

Each of the three 5th grade classes last school year had 24 students compared to this year’s 22, 23 and 24.

There will be a slight increase in the number of 6th graders — there were two classes with 18 and 20 students last year compared to 22 per class this year.

Koblerville has 19 classroom teachers, 12 of whom are highly qualified while the rest are either waiting for the results or have already taken the Praxis tests.

Koblerville has enough teachers for its students.

Its 21 classrooms include rooms for the bilingual program and the special education/learning center.

Yesterday, the construction of a new room was still ongoing but it will be used when classes open in September.

Part of the school’s preparations for the new school year are the re-painting of school buildings, minor repairs, ground beautification and summer workshops for its teachers.
