Administration will wait for CPA emergency declaration to expire

Press Secretary Charles P. Reyes Jr. at the same time said the governor supports the permanent hiring of Efrain Camacho as CPA executive director.

The administration on Friday named prominent CNMI engineer, Efrain F. Camacho, as acting CPA executive director.

Reyes said the administration has confidence in the capability and qualifications of Camacho.

Camacho will replace outgoing acting Executive Director Lee Cabrera, who will retire at the end of the month.

“As soon as the new board established itself, they will decide if they will name Mr. Camacho as permanent director,” Reyes said. “The administration believes that he’s capable and qualified for the position.”

He added that Camacho’s appointment was a result of the governor’s emergency declaration, and the new board will have go through the hiring process for a permanent executive director.

The Senate on Friday confirmed three nominees to the CPA board: former Sen. Thomas P. Villagomez, former Rep. Benigno M. Sablan and Fermin Sakisat.

They will join former Tinian Sen. Manuel Villagomez who was earlier confirmed by the Senate.

Reyes said the CPA board now has a quorum, but “once they’re duly constituted and everything is in order I think that’s the only time the emergency declaration will be lifted — maybe we will just allow it to expire next month.”

The administration, he added, is grateful for the immediate action of the Senate on the CPA nominations.

The Senate did not hold public hearings on any of the nominees.
