Chamber mum on federalization lawsuit

Chamber president Jim Arenovski on Friday said it was  “unnecessary” for them to comment on the issue.

He added, however, that Gov. Benigno R. Fitial’s decision to sue over the CNMI federalization law is part of the chief executive’s prerogatives.

“What the governor does…for the people is a real issue that is not ours,” Arenovski said. “The chamber has yet to come out with a position and I don’t think it’s necessary to express one.”

The continuity of business operations is a more pressing concern for businesses, he added.

“The important thing for us right now, instead of worrying about this lawsuit, is…how we are going to pay our employees tomorrow — how we can keep our people at work. That’s what matters to us now,” he said.

Fitial needs at least $500,000 to finance the lawsuit, which was filed in Washington, D.C.

Arenovski said the chamber was never consulted, “in any way,” prior to the filing of the lawsuit.

However, he believes that “the governor has the right to do what he feels is right to protect the people of the CNMI…and that’s his feeling and his decision.”
