Theodore Untalan, Emergency Management Office chief planner, said the tsunami evacuation exercise was very successful.
The drill was sponsored by EMO and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Dr. Ken Shankweiler of KIS Communications told Variety that the tsunami evacuation drill was part of the Disaster Preparedness Month celebration.
“This is the first full-scale tsunami evacuation exercise at a CNMI elementary school,” Shankweiler said, adding that they plan to conduct more exercises at all schools within this year.
The exercise, he said, was made possible through the request of school principal Lynette Villagomez to EMO to prepare school children on emergencies and calamities.
Representatives of the Department of Public Safety, EMO and Homeland Security said the exercise yesterday was “excellent.”
They said the children were prepared and they did what they supposed to do.
Shankweiler said the school children were able to reach to the evacuation center in 20 minutes.
