Earlier, CGC also has asked Laurie Peterka, president of the Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association, for assistance in providing for volunteer referees to supervise the games in the “CGC/SAPTember Youth & Recreation Volleyball Tournament” on September 20 to 21 at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Moreover, CGC is also open for some volunteer referees for the private schools’ annual volleyball matches.
Becky Covarrubias, sports coordinator from CGC, said the agency does not have the financial resources to pay for the service of those who will volunteer as referees in the two volleyball tournaments.
However, she added, volunteer referees for the youth & recreation volleyball games will receive a T-shirt and will be invited to an appreciation banquet in October, after the tournament.
“Unfortunately, the COPSSA league has no resources so any volunteer cannot be compensated,” Covarrubias mentioned in an e-mail to NMIVA’s president.
She hopes that people will respond to her appeal positively.
Despite the lack of funds, Peterka requested the NMIVA membership via e-mail to help out CGC with its requirement for referees, saying, “I think this is easily accomplished if we can get the schedule split up” among its ranks so that there would be minimal impact on their own schedules.
Covarrubias said the COPSSA league will open today.
Based on the schedule provided by CGC, eight schools will compete in the opening season.
The private schools that will be participating in this season’s event include Calvary Christian School, Grace Christian Academy, Marianas Baptist Academy, Mount Carmel School, Saipan Community School, Seventh Day Adventist School, Saipan International School, and Whispering Palms School.
Covarrubias pointed out that the match between the Saipan Community School and the Grace Christian Academy will be rescheduled at a later date.
CGC is the host agency of the youth and recreation volleyball and the private schools volleyball tournaments.
CGC is under the Department of Public Health.
