Letter to the Editor: Only the beginning

The gathering was only the beginning of the movement to restore the most basic and essential of public services — stable and affordable power, clean water, and adequate wastewater treatment — and to ultimately improve governance and the quality of life in our islands.

Many who attended remarked on the astonishing diversity of the participants and described the gathering as a representative slice of our community.

In the span of less than two hours, hundreds of signatures (approximately 400 so far; we are still waiting for volunteers to submit petitions) were gathered for the petition calling for federal emergency relief, court-appointed receivership for CUC, and investigation of all federal and local funds received and expended by CUC in at least the past ten years.

Written and oral testimonies were also offered by participants, describing the impacts of the CUC crisis on the community.

This Saturday, at the Sabalu Market from 7 a.m. to 12 noon,  we will be gathering more signatures and testimonies (including letters, copies of CUC bills, and photographs) to compile and send to Washington.

People who wish to sign the petition, help collect additional signatures, and/or submit testimonies may contact me at 285-3935 or [email protected], or Ed Propst at 483-7361 or [email protected].
