Letter to the Editor: To Rep. Tina Sablan

I talk to a lot of my patients both at the clinic and in the E.R. I am seeing a huge increase in anxiety symptoms, likely as a result of the economy and CUC, both of which are causing tremendous stress on citizens (and both of which are directly related to the present and past administrations and legislators, as I’m sure you would agree). Indeed, I’m seeing injuries directly related to the power situation. As well, I’m witnessing a growing despondency among the folks of Saipan. More and more Chamorros are telling me that they are fed up with the politicians, that it’s time for a change, or time to leave the islands for greener pastures…

The reason I’m telling you this is because — similar to what I wrote in last Friday’s papers — many Chamorros want change and are fed up with the politicians, nepotism, cronyism, corruption, etc. If there were ever a time we are in desperate need of a “Joan D’Arc,” it’s now. I hope that you will keep in the back of your head the possibility of running for governor. We need you. And I think that you would find a groundswell of support from the CNMI voters. I well understand that you are committed to doing the best you can for your one term in office, and probably are not considering running for a second term. I can only offer you my thoughts of the current situation…and my political support should you decide to run for governor. There are many who would stand on the corners and wave “Tina for Governor” placards because they care about the future of the island, and not for the usual “self serving, greedy” reasons (from free food to well paid, no work government jobs). Because you are a humble and honest person, you probably don’t see yourself as someone capable of running for the high office—but it is precisely those very traits that people now want to see in a person governing the islands. Most really DO WANT A CHANGE. They want someone who has demonstrated honesty, transparency, objectivity, and a sharp mind, free from the “business as usual” attitude. It is time for a real change.

Please consider — for the future of the CNMI and for each and every person living here —the idea of running for governor.

With continued and deep appreciation for your actions on Capital Hill, sincerely…

BILL WEISS
