WPS Terns beat GCA Eagles, 25-23, 12-25, 16-14.
To add to the excitement of winning the championship, WPS Terns’ very own, Jake Lee, was awarded the Most Valuable Player of his team.
Lee led WPS Terns in the championship match with much gusto, making strong, sharp returns to GCA court.
On several instances, Lee’s sharp hit were translated into points for his team, allowing Terns to inch its way up the scoreboard.
Terns got their acts together in the first set with good save, setting Lee to make successful hits.
However, Terns suddenly lost their momentum in the second set – unable to position Lee to receive the ball and make good of his spike.
Eagles claimed the second set due to Terns’ miscalculated shots.
All throughout the game, Eagles’ bench chanted, “Eagles!” as Terns’ bench side remained composed, but never failed to scream their battlecry, “Ha!” and “WPS” on each time out.
By the third set, both teams went on fourth gear. At one time, Eagles led by three points.
However, Terns came back with good save and volleys to tie the score at 14.
Sensing the ball will be out of bounds, Eagles’ Daniel Camacho did not try to return a shot. This resulted in the tie.
Eventually, two more failed shots by GCA Eagles allowed WPS Terns to grab the third and final set.
The middle school volleyball championship also witnessed the awarding of MVP awards to each member school’s best players.
The following are the young spikers who received the MVP award: J. Hoon Choi (Calvary Christian Academy); AJ Battalones (GCA); Christian Mizer (Mount Carmel School); Frankie Camacho (Saipan Community School); Jacinia Richards (Seventh Day Adventist); Emily Hsieh (Saipan International School – Green); and Angelo Jones (SIS – Blue). The leagues overall MVP is Min Sung Kim.
Sportsmanship award went to SCS.
