Ex-Marpac GM sentencing set today

The sentencing of Joseph Vincent Santos was set for Friday last week but U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Alex R. Munson reset it for today after both parties represented by Colin M. Thompson, Santos’ lawyer, and assistant U.S. Attorney Beverly McCallum  agreed to have it rescheduled.

Santos’ sentencing was originally set for Dec. 11, 2007, and has been reset eight times already.

The federal government earlier stated that between Jan. 2003 to April 2006, Santos made unexplained cash deposits totaling to $521,813.40 into four separate bank accounts.

The prosecution stated that during this period, the defendant “devised a scheme and artifice to defraud Marpac and for obtaining money and property by means of false and fraudulent pretenses, representations and promises.”

Santos pleaded guilty to mail fraud on Sept. 2007but has remained at liberty under terms and conditions set by the court previously.

Marpac is franchisee of Anheuser-Busch, and is Saipan’s distributor of beer products to the island’s retailer vendors.
