NMC said the closure plan is a WASC requirement for all institutions being reviewed for accreditation.
NMC is hopeful that its full accreditation will be reaffirmed in January.
To express it support, the House of Representatives adopted a resolution commending Northern Marianas College President Carmen Fernandez, NMC’s board of regents, faculty and staff for working diligently to meet the deadline for the submission of the report.
WASC has placed NMC on a show-cause status due to noncompliance with the accreditation requirements.
On Oct. 15, the college completed and submitted a report to the accrediting commission, highlighting the actions NMC has taken to address WASC’s concerns.
“NMC, through all its efforts and attempts towards excellence, has also felt the hardships of the current economic crisis that the commonwealth is facing,” the resolution stated.
It added, “NMC continues to work with limited funding, pulling together its staff and resources, working countless hours to address the concerns from WASC and ultimately toward full accreditation.”
NMC was also successful in completing the first required report on March 15, 2008.
The House said it believes in the mission of the college to provide its students quality and meaningful post-secondary and adult educational opportunities.
NMC was also commended for offering a four-year education program that has been instrumental in placing many local teachers into the Public School System.
