Pacific guest worker scheme delayed to next year

The pilot project, which would enable people visas to work in Australia’s horticultural sector for seven months over a 12-month period, is aimed at providing around 2,500 people for the industry which claims it is impossible to find local employees.

Australia’s Immigration Minister Chris Evans said it is taking time to ensure the proper guidelines and facilities are properly operating.

“There is a willingness to try and  get things started as soon as possible, but we are not going to get the start unless we have got it right and there’s a range of arrangements to be put in place,” Evans said.

“There was some hope of maybe doing something toward the end of this year, but I suspect it much more likely come next year as we put in place the arrangements with the island nations,” he added.
