“It is no concern that they will not be extended,” Bussanich said.
He said postal services, weather services, and air traffic services are among the benefits that may be extended come review time.He said that the Compact still exists but in the 15-year review there are some services that are going to expire.Bussanich said Palau also remains to be eligible for health and education grants, despite the Compact review.Bussanich and Program Analyst Charles Stern of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) were in Palau last week to see how Palau has made use of its Compact funds. OMB is part of the executive office that is responsible for devising the overall budget for the United States.In 2009, Palau’s Compact is up for review in 2009, and he said that his visit to Palau and meetings with President Remengesau and the ministers, are important to the future compact talks between Palau and the US.Bussanich said that he also visited the port of Palau, visited Palau National Communications Company, dispensary and the compact road.He also met with the members of the Remengesau cabinet and lauded the ministries for doing a good job.Bussanich and Stern also went to Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Island (CNMI).
